2011 AUTUMN LEAF COLLECTION
Due Date: Monday, November 4, 2011
Each student is to submit a collection of pressed, mounted, and identified leaves or herbaceous plants. Grades for this project will be determined by the following criteria:
- You must have a minimum of 15 correctly identified leaves or herbaceous plants.
- Three of the 15 must be invasive species.
- At least one must be an evergreen.
- At least one must be a compound leaf.
- At least one must have opposite branching.
- The leaves must be pressed and mounted on sheets of white paper (computer paper is okay).
- Do not put pages into plastic sleeves. Rubber cement works well to paste leaves onto paper.
- Leaves must be identified with the common name and the scientific name (ex. Black Willow – Salix nigra).
- The location (city, state) and date of each collection must be recorded (ex. Fitchburg, MA 9-20-25).
- You are to give two statements of useful and/or interesting information (For example, Black Willow is used to make artificial limbs.
- Neatness and organization are essential parts of your grade.
- Collect leaves and herbaceous plants that are local to the Northeast. Do not collect ornamental leaves, plants from the garden, or endangered species. If you are unsure what plants are native to this area, it is a good idea to bring a leaf or plant to me. If you are uncertain whether it is endangered, identify it first! Do some research.
- Pre-identified trees with labels such as in an arboretum are not allowed. You need to learn how to use a tree identification guide! You will be tested on this skill!!
- Many leaves will be identified during class; you may use these in your collection.
- y If you choose to use an herbaceous plant, remember to collect the roots.
Remember to include a title page & a Table of Content,
