7th Grade Geography with Mr. Todd Goodwin   Curriculum  Information

We study geography with the following questions in mind:
What does it mean to be a global citizen?
How can we be green  citizens?
If the globe is shrinking what does that mean to us?

Our text is Exploring our World produced with the assistance of National Geographic society.
We read it in a straightforward front to back manner, though as I 've told the students, we will not read all of it; some units will trim depending on various factors.
Each week I put the entire weekís readings on the board and I also put assignments on my assignments page on the web through First Class.
These are subject to change due to actual progress made and any last minute scheduling changes, so the best place for the students to keep up with assignments is on the board.

Another resource we occasionally use is Jr. Scholastic magazine.

We have a wonderful video and film collection that we will get into as they year moves on as well.

Each student keeps a World Current Events or CE îap. They can prepare for this using newspapers, news magazines or reputable sources from the Web. I encourage them to discuss their CE choices with you if they have questions, as occasionally they will be called upon to present their story in class. Usually the entries are due on Mondays.

Some other projects students do are :
Recycling, once every third week students help collect paper and bottles and cans around the campus. This connects with our experience at the Highland Center and the article on Deeper Shade of Green they read last week.

Students also participate in the National Geography Bee in their classes to be in the school competition in January. We donít do an on stage elimination contest. But we do eventually select a school champion, and we've had a number of students over the years go to the state bee in April at Clark University.

In the spring students will do a brief research project on travel in developing countries.
We will guide them through the research and citation process with the assistance of Ms. Herring in the Info Center.

I enjoy working with your students, we had a fine AMC trip and they ask great questions and Iím sure weíll have a great year in Geography

HAT stands for Hands Across Time a unique way to learn the chronology of US History. Each week students will learn a new set of handmotions and slogans; they should practice them so they will learn them by heart.

WHAT IS A READING BOOK MARK?
Since we do not read our text through from cover to cover, we use a guided reading bookmark according to each unit's theme.
Each student has been given a bookmark to use in her/his text.

8 G US History with Mr. Todd Goodwin           Curriculum Information

In 8G History we study US history with some of the following questions in mind:
What does it mean to be a member of the informed electorate?
What does it mean to be a citizen?
How has our history shaped us as a nation? As a people?

We use a thematic approach to this.  The themes are:
Government and Civics/ A Great Experiment?
Native American History
African-American History
Womenís History
War and Peace/ Conflict and Resolution.

Our text is The American Nation and we use a bookmark system for each unit's readings, since we will not be reading the entire text cover to cover. I also put the bookmarks on Homework assignment page on the web through First Class.

Another resource we occasionally use is Jr. Scholastic magazine.

We have a wonderful video and film collection that we will get into as they year moves on as well.

Each student also keeps a Current Events or 'CE' map. They can prepare for this by using newspapers, news magazines or reputable sources from the Web. I encourage them to discuss their CE choices with you if they have questions, as occasionally they will be called upon to present their story in class.            Students also participate in the National Geography Bee.

Two major projects students will be involved in are:

Hands Across Time: To learn the time line of US History students are learning HAT.
It is a collection of hand motions and slogans to support a set of keynotes for the chronology of US history. Sometime ask your student to run it for you.

National History Day: Students will select a topic for a research project they will work on from October until March. We will guide them through the research and citation process with the assistance of Ms. Herring in the Info Center. This yearí's theme is Revolution, reaction and reform in History.
We hope  all Applewild 8th students will go to the regional; we reserve the right to keep a project from going if it is not ready. Some may be selected to go to the state and a few may even make it to the Nationals at the University of Maryland in June.
Students may do a paper/exhibit/documentary/website or performance, individually or in a group.
Before forming groups I ask students to talk to parents to be ready for this, as weekend work will be needed.
The first competition is Saturday March 3rd 2011, at Barre Middle High School.
